There's something quite amazing about driving from sea level to 10,004 feet. Besides the dramatic change in elevation (and temperature!), the change in scenery is astounding as well. But no drive to the summit is complete without our GPS audio tour. Enjoy a historical and informative tour all the way up the mountain. Points of interest, history, and typical conditions are outlined along with the best places to stop for pictures. Whether you're heading up for sunrise, sunset, or for a hike through the crater, be sure to bring some warm layers and of course our audio tour to make the most of your trip.
Stay on the trails. About 90 percent of Haleakala’s native flora (some 370 species) are found only in Hawaii. Adaptation over millions of years in isolation from their mainland ancestors has resulted in many beautiful forms. These plants' survival are dependent upon our protection. Be sure to stay on the trails in order to avoid damaging the flora.
Keep the animals wild. The Hawaiian Goose, also known by it's Hawaiian name nēnē (pronounced nay-nay), is an endangered species that nests at Haleakala. Although tempting, please do not give them food or water, and do not approach the birds.
Visit anytime. Haleakala National Park is open year round, 24 hours a days, 7 days a week except during weather closures. The Park Headquarters Visitor's Center (7,000 ft) is open from 7AM to 3:45PM. Haleakala Visitor Center (9,740 ft) is open from 5:30AM to 3PM.
